Ibid., 47-49. Legge gives the documentation with the original Chinese. He points out that though the five Tis are mentioned in the Ritual of Chow, the Ritual of Chow is not ranked with the acknowledged classics as an authority on things pertaining to China's history. Confucius also admitted that he first learned about the five Tis from the founder of the Taoist sect, not from the Classics. |

Ibid., 47-49.

James Legge, The Notions of the Chinese, 45. For the full discussion including the quotes in Chinese from the original Chinese writings read Legge's book pages 43-50. The research is very complete. I am not sure if all the Chinese resources James Legge used are still available to researchers, I was able to locate copies of the Ming Statutes and Qing Statutes at Tai Da, Taiwan’ s national University in Taipei.

James Legge in his book, The Notions of the Chinese Concerning God and Spirits, gives much of the documentation from the original Chinese documents. His research focuses on the Ming Dynasty.
John Ross in his book, The Original Religion of China, on pages 293-311 gives the translation of some of the Manchu (Qing) Ritual as it was at the beginning of this Century. The Manchu ritual concerning the worship and sacrifice at the Temple of Heaven is another powerful proof of China’ s understanding of Shang Ti as the only Supreme God in her history.

From our research it also appears that some, if not many, of the common people during the Qing Dynasty still had a strong concept of Heaven (Shang Ti) as the Supreme God. In The Memoirs of the Reverend W. Milne on pages 206-207 there is the account given of a convert to Christ who on the occasion of his baptism gave the following testimony: "I was never much given to idolatry, and seldom went to the temples. I sometimes prayed towards heaven, but lived in careless indifference." |

從我們的研究當中,我們感覺多數清朝的普通百姓仍然對上帝有強烈的意識。The Memoirs of the Reverend W. Milne (憐維琳牧師回憶錄)此書206-207 頁寫到一位臨受洗歸依基督的信徒說:『我從來不拜偶像,也幾乎從沒上過廟宇,我有時向天祈禱,但是我卻心不在焉。』 |
